Land Clearing Services Available in Bastrop County
Six posted prices cover the land clearing projects.
- Forestry mulching services on pine understory, yaupon and post oak brush: $1,200 to $2,000 an acre.
- Lot clearing for a homesite: a half-acre lot is one skid steer day, $2,800.
- Clearing brush and underbrushing on fire-scar tracts and creek bottoms, by the day.
- Stump grinding: $4 per inch of diameter, $175 minimum per stump.
- Site prep and dirt work services: grubbing, rough grading and pad drainage at $160 an hour with operator.
- Bush hogging on agricultural land: $60 to $90 an acre, $400 minimum.
Our crews carry the equipment to handle 8-inch stems on the skid steer and dead standing pine and hardwood on the 300-hp machine. Tree removal and storm cleanup go by the hour.
Residential Land Clearing for New Homesites in Elgin, Smithville and Cedar Creek
The county permitted 1,546 single-family homes in 2025 per the Census Building Permits Survey, up 9 percent, many on one to five acre lots sold to buyers priced out of greater Austin. Most residential jobs are loblolly over yaupon off SH 21 or FM 969: the homeowner wants the live pines kept, the dead ones and the undergrowth gone, and the pad grubbed. A half-acre to one-acre lot is one skid steer day, $2,800, trees and branches mulched in place. A 1.2-acre lot we cleared in Liberty Hill ran exactly that. Small residential lots pay the same day rate. Site preparation on the blackland side adds a drainage swale, because that clay holds water for weeks.
Lost Pines Forestry Mulching and Brush Clearing Across Bastrop County
Forestry mulching leaves the wood on the ground as a two to four inch mulch layer, and on Lost Pines sand that layer is the only thing holding the slope. It slows erosion toward the Colorado River, holds moisture, and shades the yaupon seed. On our jobs around the state park the mix is loblolly, yaupon, post oak and standing dead pine. Pine and hardwood over 8 inches go to the 300-hp mulcher at $4,200 a day plus transport. Selective clearing is the rule: dead pine down, live pine and post oak kept. An 8-acre mesquite and post oak pasture in Parker County took our crew two days, $8,400, and the blackland side here clears about the same. Yaupon will overgrow a mulched floor in four years, so plan a bush hog pass.
How Much Does Land Clearing Cost per Acre Here?
Pine understory and yaupon mulching runs $1,200 to $2,000 an acre throughout Bastrop County, and full site clearing to dirt runs $2,000 to $4,500. Two rules first: wet blackland adds a day from November to April, and ten or more stumps are priced by the day.
- Skid steer mulcher: $2,800 a day, transport included within 60 miles of Johnson City.
- 300-hp mulcher, 8 ft head: $4,200 a day plus transport.
- Haul-off: $650 to $1,200 a load, $1,100 minimum trip.
- Pond or stock tank site excavation: dozer at $160 an hour with operator.
EQIP cost-share through NRCS pays 50 to 75 percent of the payment-schedule rate for brush management, practice 314. The on-site estimate is free; I walk the property with you, count standing dead pine, and the day count goes in writing. Terrain, Soil and Vegetation on Bastrop County Acreage
The county's soils change three times in twenty miles. The Lost Pines sit on deep sand east of the Colorado River. Lots near Colorado River bottoms carry pecan, hardwood and FEMA-mapped floodplain. North toward US 290 the sand gives way to blackland prairie under post oak and hackberry, and west toward Cedar Creek the cedar brakes start, ashe juniper on limestone. The sand drains fast and never costs a day; the blackland costs one every wet week. I read site conditions on the first pass: soil color, dead pine count, canopy percent. Woodland pine with a yaupon floor mulches at 2 to 3 acres a day on the skid steer.
Houston Toad Habitat, Burn Bans and Floodplain Permits Before Land Clearing
No state permit covers clearing your own land in Texas, but Bastrop County's rules carry one federal item. The Lost Pines Habitat Conservation Plan covers Houston toad habitat under USFWS on the sandy pine tracts, and clearing inside the plan area follows its rules, so I check the map before the crew rolls. Burn bans come from the county judge or commissioners court, and TCEQ outdoor burning rules govern piles; after 2011 nobody here argues about mulching instead. The county floodplain office permits dirt work on FEMA-mapped land along the Colorado. Texas A&M Forest Service posts the county wildfire risk rating.
Areas We Serve in Bastrop County: Bastrop, Elgin, Smithville, Cedar Creek
Both city-page towns carry the residential and commercial work: infill lots, commercial development pads along SH 71 and US 290, tree clearing on a new fence line at the edge of town. Smithville and Cedar Creek bring Lost Pines tracts, Paige and McDade bring post oak pasture. Bastrop, TX and the surrounding areas into Lee, Fayette, Caldwell and Travis counties sit inside the service area. Of the 254 counties in Texas, this is where the soil map matters most to the price. The Central Texas page covers the region.
