Land Clearing Services Available in Walker County
Six services with posted prices cover the land clearing projects that come off I-45.
- Forestry mulching services on pine understory: $1,200 to $2,000 an acre.
- Lot clearing for a homesite: half an acre is one skid steer day, $2,800.
- Clearing brush and underbrushing along the timber edge, by the day.
- Stump grinding: $4 per inch of diameter, $175 minimum per stump.
- Site prep and dirt work services: grubbing, rough grading and pad drainage at $160 an hour.
- Bush hogging on agricultural land and old pasture: $60 to $90 an acre, $400 minimum.
Our crews carry the equipment to handle 8-inch stems on the skid steer and mature pine on the 300-hp machine. Tree removal on a single lot and storm cleanup go by the hour. Slabs, wells and septic are other trades.
Residential Land Clearing for Homesites in Huntsville, Riverside and Dodge
Walker County permitted 485 single-family homes in 2025 per the Census Building Permits Survey, down 6 percent, and most of the rural homesites outside city limits never needed one. Most residential jobs are five to twenty acre tracts of loblolly over yaupon off FM 1374 or FM 980. The homeowner wants the pines kept and the undergrowth gone around the pad. That is one skid steer day per acre and a half, $2,800, trees and branches mulched in place. Small residential lots inside town pay the same day rate. Site preparation adds pad grubbing and a drainage swale pointed away from the slab.
Forestry Mulching and Brush Clearing Across Walker County
Forestry mulching leaves the wood on the ground as a two to four inch mulch layer, and on sandy loam that layer holds moisture, slows erosion on the slopes toward the Trinity River and shades the yaupon seed bank. On our jobs along the Sam Houston National Forest edge the understory is yaupon, sweetgum, privet and loblolly saplings. Pine and hardwood over 8 inches go to the 300-hp mulcher at $4,200 a day plus transport. Selective clearing is what most buyers want: open the floor, keep the sawtimber. I walked a ten-acre tract last summer at roughly 80 percent ground cover and the crew left it under 5 percent in three days. Yaupon will overgrow the floor again in four years, so plan a bush hog pass.
How Much Does Land Clearing Cost per Acre Here?
Pine understory mulching runs $1,200 to $2,000 an acre throughout Walker County, and full site clearing to dirt runs $2,000 to $4,500. Two rules first: standing water after a wet week adds a day, and the south end of the county toward the national forest may carry transport on the 300-hp machine.
- Skid steer mulcher: $2,800 a day, transport included within 60 miles of the yard.
- 300-hp mulcher, 8 ft head: $4,200 a day plus transport.
- Haul-off: $650 to $1,200 a load, $1,100 minimum trip.
- Pond site excavation: dozer at $160 an hour with operator; the dam goes to a dirt contractor I can name.
The on-site estimate is free; I walk the property with you, call the canopy percent, and the day count goes on paper before I leave. Send the form or call (832) 987-3495, and Teo will call back before the end of the business day.
Terrain, Soil and Vegetation on Walker County Acreage
The county's ground is sandy loam over clay, rolling toward the Trinity River on the east and flattening into the national forest on the south. I-45 splits it. East toward Riverside and the Lake Livingston edge the yaupon thickens into a wall, and lots near Lake Livingston carry the heaviest cover in the county. The Trinity River bottoms are FEMA-mapped floodplain with hardwood and standing water half the year. I read site conditions on the first pass: slope, soil color, stem size, distance to pavement. Open-spaced pine woodland mulches at 3 to 4 acres a day. A yaupon wall drops that to 2.
Sam Houston National Forest Lines, Burn Bans and Texas A&M Forest Service Before Land Clearing
Texas requires no state permit to clear your own land, and Walker County's rules are about fire and the forest boundary. Burn bans are the county judge's or commissioners court's call, and TCEQ outdoor burning rules cover piles the rest of the year. Mulching leaves no pile. The Sam Houston National Forest boundary is surveyed, not fenced, so I pull the plat before the crew works a tract that touches federal ground. Texas A&M Forest Service posts the county wildfire risk rating, prescribed-burn notices and timber-sale guidance, and a mature loblolly stand may be worth selling before we grind the floor. Along the Trinity, the county permits dirt work on FEMA-mapped floodplain.
Areas We Serve in Walker County: Huntsville, New Waverly, Riverside, Dodge
Huntsville has its own page and carries the residential and commercial work: infill lots, commercial development pads along I-45, tree clearing on a new fence line at the edge of town. Riverside and Dodge bring pine homesites. Huntsville, TX and the surrounding areas into Montgomery, San Jacinto, Trinity and Grimes counties sit inside the service area. Of the 254 counties in Texas, this is the one where the most buyers arrive with a Houston plat and a county map. The East Texas page covers the region.
