Lot Clearing and Acreage Prep in Boerne, Comfort and Fair Oaks Ranch
The county permitted 351 single-family homes in the 2025 Census Building Permits Survey, down 37 percent, and that understates the work because rural tracts need no permit. Residential land clearing here is cedar and live oak on rock, and rock adds a day on nearly every lot. A half-acre lot is one skid steer day, $2,800, site prep for the slab included. Small residential lots with 10 or more stumps go by the day. Ranchettes off SH 46 run 5 to 50 acres; the homeowner usually wants a pad and a view lane, the rest thinned to 10 percent canopy. Commercial development and commercial land clearing for master-planned communities along I-10 take the same machines, more days.
Forestry Mulching and Clearing Brush in Old-Growth Cedar
Forestry mulching is how our crews take ashe juniper, the cedar on every ridge here, down to a mulch mat without a pile or a match. It grinds trees and brush standing, and the wood stays over the undergrowth. Mulching services run $900 to $1,400 an acre under 30 percent canopy, $3,000 to $4,000 in old-growth, which is most of this county. Selective clearing keeps the marked live oaks. Texas A&M Forest Service sets the oak wilt wound window at February through June, and our crews cut no oak limb then. AgriLife research shows mature cedar canopy intercepts the first inch of rain; on our jobs the seeps return the first wet year after. Nobody ever bought a ranch for the cedar. Plenty have sold one because of it.

Terrain, Soil and Vegetation From Cibolo Creek to the Guadalupe
Kendall County's ground is Glen Rose and Edwards limestone with caliche, a few inches of soil and cedar at 50 to 70 percent canopy on the ridges. Tracts near Cibolo Creek and along the Guadalupe River have the deepest soil, the biggest live oaks and the FEMA floodplain. Between them the divides are rock, where a dozer blade skates and a mulcher head does not care. Site conditions change with every draw, so the walk sets the days. Drainage off the limestone is fast, so the mulch mat left down is the erosion control until grass returns.
Edwards Aquifer, Warbler Season and Burn Bans Before You Clear
Nearly all of the county sits on the Edwards Aquifer Recharge Zone or its contributing zone, the first line I check. On mapped recharge land, TCEQ requires a Water Pollution Abatement Plan before grading or clearing disturbs the soil. Boerne's tree ordinance applies inside city limits. The golden-cheeked warbler nests in mature cedar-oak canopy from March to July, so under TPWD and USFWS guidance we mulch mature canopy August through February. Burn bans come from the county judge or commissioners court and TCEQ outdoor burning rules govern every pile; we leave none. When I wrote EQIP plans a missed rule cost a season; the quote names yours.
