Stump Grinding and Stump Removal in Texas: $4 per Inch, Lots by the Day

Our stump grinding service is an add-on to a clearing job, priced at $4 per inch of diameter with a $175 minimum per stump. We grind the stumps our crews leave after felling, and we grind the ones a previous owner left, on any tract within 60 miles of Johnson City, Lindale or Weatherford. I have ground cedar, mesquite, post oak and loblolly stumps since 2015, and each one behaves differently below ground level. Send the form with a stump count or call (832) 987-3495. Teo returns every call before the end of the business day.

Stump Grinding vs. Stump Removal: Which Service You Need

Grinding takes the stump 6-12 inches below ground level and leaves the root system in the dirt to rot. Tree stump removal, the complete removal of the root ball, uses the dozer at $160 an hour. Grinding is the right service for a yard, a pasture or a mowing line. Pulling is the right service under a slab, a driveway or a septic field, where a rotting root would settle the ground. On a house pad we always pull. Everywhere else we grind, because the hole is smaller and the price is a third of the removal process.

How Much Does Stump Grinding Cost in Texas

The cost is $4 per inch of diameter measured at the widest point, with a $175 minimum each. A 20-inch post oak is $175. A 36-inch live oak is $144 on the formula, so it bills at the $175 minimum too. A 60-inch pecan is $240.

  • Singles, any size stump to 60 inches: $175 to $240.
  • Lots with 10 or more stumps: priced by the day, $2,800 with the skid steer and grinding equipment on the trailer.
  • Stumps in caliche or blackland: the same price, a longer day.
  • Hauling the grindings: $650 to $1,200 a load, only if you want them gone.

Grinding on its own, with no clearing job attached, carries the $1,100 minimum trip. Call (832) 987-3495 or send the form with a count and the biggest diameter, and Teo calls back before the end of the business day with the math done.

Grinding Stumps in Limestone, Blackland Clay and East Texas Sand

Three soils, three kinds of day. On Hill Country limestone cedar stumps, ashe juniper, sit in caliche, the teeth hit rock at 6 inches, and the crew swaps teeth twice a day. On our jobs in Parker and Collin County mesquite and hackberry stumps grind easy when the blackland is dry and smear when it is wet, so November to April adds hours. Mesquite does not die when you cut it. It takes it personally, which is why we grind the crown 8 inches down, not 4. In East Texas sand loblolly stumps are the fastest grind in the state, and the pine roots rot in two seasons. On the Gulf Coast tallow stumps resprout from every root unless the crown goes 10 inches deep.

Stump Grinding After Land Clearing and Tree Removal

Most of our grinding follows a clearing day. The Celina job in Collin County was 0.6 acres of hackberry and bois d'arc, one day on the skid steer for $2,800, plus 11 stumps for $420. Bois d'arc is the hardest wood in Texas and it chewed a set of teeth on its own. When the clearing crew is already on your land, grinding costs the $4 per inch and nothing else, no trip charge. Tree service outfits that drop a single tree in a subdivision are a different trade. We clear it and grind what is left, and the same crew does both.

Multiple Stumps, Lot Stump Work and Root Grinding

Ten or more stumps on one tract switch the price from per inch to per day, $2,800 with the machine on site. A lot cleared of 30 post oaks by a builder carries 30 stumps nobody budgeted for, and one day of stump grinding will clear them. Surface roots on a live oak or hackberry get ground flush as part of the same day, so a mower can pass. Property owners buying a wooded lot should walk it with a tape, measure the biggest 5 stumps, and send the numbers with the form. I price the day from those five.

What Is Stump Grinding and How Deep Does the Grind Go

A stump grinder is a carbide cutting wheel on a hydraulic arm. We grind the stump in sweeps and chew it into chips, 6-12 inches below ground level on a normal job and 8 to 10 inches on mesquite and tallow. Our stump grinders ride on the skid steer, so the same machine that cleared your brush turns around and grinds. Search 'stump grinding near me' and the ads all read alike: best stump grinding experts, certified stump grinding experts, premiere stump grinding contractors, top rated stump grinding contractors, a page of client’s reviews, and a promise that stump grinding's certified arborists can assist with all your tree service needs while a team of pruners and arborists can creatively manage your hedges. That is a tree trimming company, and it is not us. We are a land clearing outfit with grinding equipment, and the stump below ground level is the only part we care about.

What Happens to the Grindings: Cleanup, Fill and Regrading

A 24-inch crown produces about a pickup load of wood chips mixed with dirt. We rake them back into the hole, mound them 4 inches high, and they settle flush in a year as the chips rot. If you want a lawn, flower beds or any outdoor environment planted over the spot, we haul them away at $650 to $1,200 a load and you bring in topsoil, because fresh grindings pull nitrogen out of the soil for two seasons. Nobody burns a pile of them under a county burn ban, and most Hill Country counties carry one by July. In a pasture, leave them. Grind it into mulch and the grass closes over by the second spring. Thorough stump cleanup means the grindings are raked, not that the hole is filled with bought dirt. A landscape with professional stump removal service behind it shows no hole at all after a season.

Where We Grind Stumps: Within 60 Miles of a Yard, Plus Any Clearing Job in TX

Johnson City covers the Hill Country, Austin and San Antonio. Weatherford covers Fort Worth, Denton and the Collin County towns. Lindale covers Tyler, Longview and Lufkin and the surrounding areas. A homeowner with one stump outside those circles should call a local tree company, because our minimum trip is $1,100 and that is not a fair price for one. Inside the circles, or on any clearing job anywhere in Texas, we offer a wide range of stump grinding services and professional stump grinding services with the equipment to remove tree stumps of any size, plus stump removal services for residential and commercial properties, and the free estimate comes with the clearing quote. Our crews are insured, locally owned and operated out of three yards, and we do not pour concrete, drill wells or demolish houses. Call (832) 987-3495 or fill out the form, and Teo gets back to you before the end of the business day.

Luanne Pruitt

Owner, Pruitt Range & Brush

Luanne Pruitt, 51, owns Pruitt Range & Brush and runs it from Johnson City in Blanco County, with crews in Lindale and Weatherford. She grew up on a cow-calf ranch near Llano. She spent 12 years as an NRCS field technician writing EQIP Brush Management plans for Texas ranchers, bought her first mulcher in 2014 when too many of those plans sat unexecuted, and has cleared cedar, mesquite, pine understory and homesite lots full time since 2015. Her dispatcher Teo takes every call and form.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions About Stump Grinding in Texas

Fill out the form or call (832) 987-3495. Teo will call you back before the end of the business day.

How much does it cost to grind a stump?

$4 per inch of diameter with a $175 minimum, so most stumps under 44 inches bill at $175 and a 60-inch pecan bills at $240. Ten or more stumps go by the day at $2,800. Other outfits say 'stump grinding offers free estimates and upfront prices on all services provided,' and on this one point I agree with them: the price is on this page.

Can I grind a stump myself with a rental?

Yes, a rental grinder handles one under 12 inches in soft ground in about an hour, and it costs much less than our minimum. Above 12 inches, in caliche, or with 10 or more stumps, the rental loses a day and a set of teeth. Rent for one small one, call us for a lot.

Will the roots keep growing after grinding?

Not on oak, pecan, cedar or pine, where the root system dies with the crown and rots in two to five years. Mesquite, hackberry, tallow and bois d'arc can resprout from roots, so we grind those crowns 8 to 10 inches deep and you spot spray any shoots the first summer. One pass handles 9 out of 10.

Why remove a stump at all, and what about the mowing hazard?

One in a mowing line is a hazard to a deck mower and to anyone walking at night, and unsightly tree stumps cost you on a sale. Grinding will eliminate tripping hazards, reclaim the outdoor space for grass, and remove tree stumps that attract termites 20 feet from a house. Stump grinding promotes healthy trees nearby too, since the old roots stop hosting fungus.

Do you offer tree trimming, planting or emergency tree work?

No. Residents often have tree emergencies after a storm, and a tree service with a bucket truck is the right call, not a land clearing crew. Ads that say 'stump grinding offers planting services for trees' describe a nursery, not us. We take care of it quickly when the job is clearing, grinding or hauling, safely and efficiently, and we leave the trimming to arborists. Call (832) 987-3495 and Teo will say which one you need.
