Land Clearing Services Available in Bexar County
Six professional land clearing services, the same on a Helotes hillside or an east-side flat. Forestry mulching for cedar brakes and mesquite flats. Lot clearing for a homesite, one day per half acre. Brush clearing and underbrushing to open a live oak woodland for grass. Stump grinding at $4 per inch of diameter, $175 minimum per stump. Tree clearing, site clearing and site preparation to dirt, with fence line and corridor cleanup. Dirt work services, grubbing and rough grading, at $160 an hour with operator. Concrete, wells, septic and house demolition are not mine.
Lot Clearing and Acreage Prep in Helotes, Converse and Timberwood Park
The county permitted 4,589 single-family homes in the 2025 Census Building Permits Survey, down 21 percent, most in master-planned communities outside Loop 1604. Residential land clearing around Helotes is cedar and live oak on limestone, where rock adds a day. East of 1604 it is mesquite and hackberry on clay, where a wet winter adds a day. A half-acre lot is one skid steer day, $2,800, site prep for the slab included. Small residential lots with 10 or more stumps go by the day. Inside San Antonio and its ETJ, significant and heritage trees fall under the city ordinance, so the homeowner should flag them first. Commercial development and commercial land clearing take the same machines, more days.
Forestry Mulching and Clearing Brush, Cedar North and Mesquite East
Forestry mulching takes ashe juniper, the north side's cedar, and east-side mesquite with one head. It grinds trees and brush standing; the wood stays as mulch over the undergrowth, nothing piled or burned. Mulching services run $900 to $1,400 an acre light, $3,000 to $4,000 in old-growth. Selective clearing keeps the marked live oaks, and our crews cut no oak limb in the Texas A&M Forest Service oak wilt window, February through June. AgriLife research shows mature cedar canopy intercepts the first inch of rain; on our jobs the seeps return the first wet year after. Mesquite regrows from the root crown, so a mulched flat needs a June bush hog pass. Mesquite does not die when you cut it. It takes it personally.
How Much Does Land Clearing Cost in Bexar County?
Land clearing in Bexar County costs $900 to $4,000 an acre for cedar or mesquite by density and $2,000 to $4,500 an acre for full clearing to dirt. Rules first: rock or caliche adds a day north of Loop 1604, and wet clay adds a day east of it in winter.
- Skid steer mulcher: $2,800 a day, transport included within 60 miles of Johnson City.
- 300-hp mulcher (8 ft head): $4,200 a day plus transport.
- Cedar or mesquite mulching: $900 to $1,400 light, $1,800 to $2,600 medium, $3,000 to $4,000 dense.
- Bush hogging for mesquite regrowth: $60 to $90 an acre, $400 minimum.
The closest match to a north-side hillside in my logs is 3 acres in Dripping Springs: selective cedar for the oaks and the view, 2 days on the skid steer, $5,600. On agricultural land under an approved EQIP plan, NRCS cost-share pays 50 to 75 percent of the practice 314 rate. For a free quote, call (832) 987-3495 or send the form. Terrain, Soil and Vegetation Across the Balcones Escarpment
Bexar County's ground changes at the Balcones Escarpment, which runs under Loop 1604 on the north side. Above it, near Government Canyon and Helotes, you are on Edwards limestone with caliche, thin soil and cedar at 40 to 70 percent canopy. Below it the land flattens into clay with mesquite, huisache and hackberry. Leon Creek bottoms carry FEMA mapped floodplain. Site conditions decide the machine: a mulcher climbs the escarpment and floats on wet clay. Drainage off the limestone is fast, so the mulch mat left down is the erosion control.
Edwards Aquifer, City Tree Rules and Burn Bans Before You Clear
The north side sits on the Edwards Aquifer Recharge Zone, the first line I check. On mapped recharge land, TCEQ requires a Water Pollution Abatement Plan before grading or clearing disturbs the soil. San Antonio's tree ordinance applies inside city limits and the ETJ. The golden-cheeked warbler nests in mature cedar-oak canopy from March to July, so under TPWD and USFWS guidance we mulch mature canopy August through February. Burn bans come from the county judge or commissioners court and TCEQ outdoor burning rules govern every pile; we leave none. When I wrote EQIP plans a missed rule cost a season; the quote names yours.
