Land Clearing Services Available in Nueces County
Six posted prices cover the land clearing projects we take on the coast.
- Forestry mulching services on mesquite, huisache and tallow: $900 to $4,000 an acre by cover.
- Lot clearing for a homesite: a half-acre lot is one skid steer day, $2,800.
- Clearing brush and underbrushing along drainage ditches and fence rows, by the day.
- Stump grinding: $4 per inch of diameter, $175 minimum per stump.
- Site prep and dirt work services: grubbing, rough grading and drainage at $160 an hour with operator.
- Bush hogging on agricultural land once the crowns are out: $60 to $90 an acre, $400 minimum.
Our crews bring the equipment to handle 8-inch stems on the skid steer, and the 300-hp machine takes old mesquite the way it takes pine and hardwood up north. Tree removal and storm cleanup go by the hour.
Residential Land Clearing for New Homesites in Corpus Christi and Flour Bluff
Nueces County permitted 1,332 single-family homes in 2025 per the Census Building Permits Survey, down 12 percent. Most residential jobs are half-acre to two-acre lots under mesquite, huisache and tallow: the homeowner wants the undergrowth gone, the live oak kept if there is one, and the pad grubbed before the slab crew comes. That is one skid steer day, $2,800, trees and branches mulched in place. Small residential lots pay the same day rate. Site preparation on gumbo clay adds a drainage swale, because this ground does not drain, it waits.
Mesquite and Huisache Forestry Mulching, Brush Clearing Across Nueces County
Forestry mulching grinds mesquite and huisache at the root crown and leaves the wood as a two to four inch mulch layer. It slows erosion toward Oso Creek and holds moisture through the dry months. On our jobs on the farm side the mix is mesquite, huisache, Chinese tallow and yaupon in the bottoms. Stems over 8 inches go to the 300-hp mulcher at $4,200 a day plus transport. Selective clearing keeps the live oaks and any mesquite shade tree you want. I walked a two-acre lot last winter at roughly 70 percent cover and the crew left it under 5 percent in one day. Huisache will overgrow a cleared lot in three years from any crown left in the ground, so the crown comes out.
How Much Does Land Clearing Cost per Acre Here?
Mesquite and huisache mulching runs $900 to $1,400 an acre at light cover, $1,800 to $2,600 at medium, and $3,000 to $4,000 for old-growth mesquite throughout Nueces County. Full site clearing to dirt runs $2,000 to $4,500. Two rules first: wet gumbo clay adds a day, and transport is quoted before the day rate.
- Skid steer mulcher: $2,800 a day plus transport from Johnson City.
- 300-hp mulcher, 8 ft head: $4,200 a day plus transport.
- Haul-off: $650 to $1,200 a load, $1,100 minimum trip.
- Pond or stock tank site excavation: dozer at $160 an hour with operator.
EQIP cost-share through NRCS pays 50 to 75 percent of the payment-schedule rate for brush management, practice 314. Terrain, Soil and Vegetation on Nueces County Acreage
The county's ground is flat gumbo clay, and the clay sets the machine. The mulcher floats on wet clay where a dozer sinks to the axle, so the dozer waits for a dry week. Lots near Corpus Christi Bay and along Oso Creek sit in FEMA-mapped floodplain and coastal V zones. West along I-37 the brush thickens into mesquite and huisache pasture on old farmland, and the Nueces River bottoms hold hackberry, tallow and standing water. I read site conditions on the first pass: cover percent, soil color, standing water, salt crust. Woodland mesquite at medium cover mulches at 2 to 3 acres a day on the skid steer.
FEMA Floodplain Permits, Coastal V Zones and Burn Bans Before Land Clearing
No state permit covers clearing your own land in Texas, and Nueces County's rules are about water and fire. The county floodplain office issues a development permit before dirt moves in FEMA-mapped floodplain or a coastal V zone, and on the island and the bay side that is most of the ground. Mulching without grading usually stays outside the permit; grading does not. The county judge or commissioners court sets burn bans; TCEQ outdoor burning rules govern piles otherwise. Mulching leaves no pile. Inside city limits the tree rules cover protected live oaks on commercial land.
Areas We Serve in Nueces County: Corpus Christi, Robstown, Port Aransas, Flour Bluff
The city has its own page and carries the residential and commercial work: infill lots, commercial development pads along SH 358 and I-37, tree clearing on a new fence line at the edge of town. Port Aransas brings sandy lots under salt cedar and tallow, and the farm side out to Bishop brings mesquite pasture reclaims. Corpus Christi, TX and the surrounding areas into San Patricio, Kleberg and Jim Wells counties ride on the same transport quote, so the service area is as wide as the trip. Of the 254 counties in Texas, this is the farthest from a yard we work on a schedule. The Gulf Coast page covers the region.
